How to Install and Take Down Your Car Shelter Yourself

Just bought a car shelter, or already have one, and winter is coming? Installing and taking down a car shelter isn't complicated if you follow the right steps. Here are our practical tips, and your options if you'd rather leave it to our team.

How to install a car shelter

Every AbrisDirect shelter comes with the manufacturer's instructions specific to your model: follow those first, since they account for the number of arches and the exact size of your structure. A few general principles also help for a successful installation:

  • Choose a flat, clear surface, and check the available space before you start.
  • Assemble the frame on the ground first (arches, crossbars) before lifting it, rather than adjusting everything once it's standing.
  • Anchor the frame before stretching the canvas over it: a well-anchored frame is more stable for handling the canvas afterward.
  • Stretch the canvas gradually from one side to the other rather than fully securing one side first, to avoid permanent creases.
  • Do a final anchor check before the first snowfall (see our article on maintaining and anchoring your car shelter).

Can you install a car shelter by yourself?

It depends on the model. A simple shelter or a small utility shelter can generally be set up solo, with a bit more time. A double shelter, wider and heavier, is much easier to install with two people, especially when lifting the frame and positioning the canvas. A few tips if you're installing alone:

  • Pick a day with no wind: the canvas is much harder to handle when it's windy.
  • Lay out all the pieces before starting, so you're not searching for a part mid-assembly.
  • A step stool helps reach the top of the arches on taller models.

If you'd rather not deal with it, our team offers a professional installation service, done according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

How to take down a car shelter at the end of the season

Taking it down is basically the reverse of installing it:

  • Remove the canvas first, while the frame is still in place to help you handle it.
  • Clean the canvas with soapy water before storing it, to remove salt and winter residue.
  • Fold the canvas along its original creases rather than at new spots, to reduce wear on the fabric over time.
  • Then remove the arches and the frame, and store everything in a dry place.

Short on space to store your shelter over the summer? AbrisDirect also offers a take-down and storage service.
